Rough Arching

Rough arching

The plates are firmly secured to the arching cradle and a Lancelot chain saw arbor mounted in an angle grinder is used to remove the bulk of the material while a power hand planer is used to form the long arch.  The plate is then mounted alongside an arching template in the Gemini wood carving duplicator where the arch is finalized within 5mm of the final shape, this serves to create a more consistent model as well reducing joint fatigue.  The toolmarks are then removed with hand tools before the edge thickness is established using a Safe-T-Planer chucked in the milling machine.  The arch is now ready to be finished by hand.
